Louis van Teeffelen for Wébé 'Milaan' Extendable Teak Dining Table, Netherlands 1960s
Extendable dining table, model "Milaan," designed by Louis van Teeffelen for Wébé, the Netherlands, 1960s. Solid teak top with softly pointed, boomerang-shaped corners on a frame of slender, tapered dowel legs — a signature of van Teeffelen's work for Wébé and closely related in spirit to the Scandinavian teak furniture of the same period. The top extends via a concealed pull-out leaf at the center, taking the table from a compact four-to-six-seat dining table to a full-length format for larger gatherings, without altering its silhouette when closed. Warm, well-figured teak grain throughout, in good original vintage condition consistent with age and use.
Information
This extendable dining table, model "Milaan," was designed by Louis van Teeffelen for the Dutch manufacturer Wébé in the 1960s, during the height of the Netherlands' mid-century teak furniture production. Van Teeffelen was one of the more prolific Dutch designers of the period, and the Milaan is among his best-known dining table designs, closely aligned in construction and detailing with the Scandinavian teak furniture that was widely exported across Europe at the time.
The rectangular top is solid teak with softly pointed, boomerang-shaped corners, a detail typical of van Teeffelen's work and one that gives the table a lighter visual footprint than a standard rectangular form. It rests on four slender, tapered dowel legs in the same wood, joined to a simple apron frame — a construction typical of Dutch and Scandinavian dining tables of the era, built for durability rather than ornament.
The table extends via a concealed pull-out leaf stored within the frame at the center of the top. Closed, it measures 130 cm in length; drawn open, it extends to 170 cm, adding 40 cm of surface for larger gatherings without changing its footprint or requiring a separate stored leaf. Width is 86 cm and height is 74 cm throughout.
The teak shows good, even grain and a warm, original patina consistent with age and honest use; any wear is in keeping with a genuine vintage piece rather than a reproduction. As with all Wébé and van Teeffelen furniture from this period, the value lies as much in the joinery and proportion as in the material itself.
