Louis Kalff NX41 Wall Lamp for Philips – 1960s Dutch Design

A distinctive NX41 wall lamp designed by Louis Kalff for Philips, dating from the early 1960s. With its sculptural construction and characteristic combination of wood and opaline glass, the NX41 is a fine example of Dutch mid-century lighting design.

The lamp features a beautifully shaped bent plywood frame, creating an architectural silhouette around the opaline glass diffuser. The warm tones of the wood contrast with the soft white glass, while the open construction allows the light to spread both through and around the shade. When illuminated, it produces a warm and atmospheric glow without losing the strong graphic character of the design.

Louis Kalff was one of the key figures behind Philips' lighting design during the twentieth century. His work is recognised for combining functionality with modernist forms, and many of his lamps have since become sought-after pieces among collectors of Dutch modernism and European mid-century design. The NX41 is particularly interesting because of its unusual use of bent plywood, giving it a noticeably different appearance from Kalff's better-known metal table and desk lamps.
