A striking pair of vintage Cow Horn chairs produced by Mahjongg Vlaardingen in the Netherlands during the 1960s. With their sculptural teak frames and characteristic horn-shaped armrests, these chairs are a distinctive example of the Scandinavian-influenced modernism that defined Dutch furniture design of the period.
The design immediately stands out for its beautifully shaped solid teak construction. The rear legs flow upwards into the curved backrest, while the projecting armrests create the characteristic “cow horn” silhouette from which the model takes its name. Viewed from the side or back, the craftsmanship and organic lines of the wooden frame are particularly apparent.
The chairs retain their light-coloured upholstered seats and backrests, providing a subtle contrast with the warm tones and grain of the teak. Their relatively wide proportions and supportive back make them suitable as dining chairs, desk chairs or statement chairs within a living space.
Both chairs retain their original Mahjongg Vlaardingen Holland manufacturer’s label underneath, providing clear documentation of their origin.
This Cow Horn model is associated in the vintage design market with Danish designers Johannes Andersen and Arne Vodder. Examples have been attributed to both designers, including a circa 1964 example offered as Arne Vodder for Mahjongg Holland. As definitive period documentation for this particular model has not yet been established, we prefer to identify the chairs by their confirmed manufacturer rather than present an uncertain designer attribution as fact.
