Information

Designed by Cees Braakman for Pastoe in the Netherlands during the 1960s, this large modular wall unit belongs to the celebrated "Made to Measure" series — one of the earliest and most influential modular furniture systems to come out of Dutch design. Conceived so that individual units could be freely combined, stacked, or rearranged according to the owner's space and needs, the series marked a significant shift in how storage furniture was designed and used, well ahead of its time.

This particular configuration brings together several of the system's core elements in a single, cohesive composition:

  • A four-drawer chest with the model's original black-lacquered metal handles
  • An open bookcase section with adjustable shelving and cream-lacquered back panels, adding a subtle tonal contrast to the warm teak
  • A drop-front bar cabinet that folds down to double as a writing desk
  • A sliding-door cabinet module for additional closed storage

The entire unit is raised on slender black metal legs, a detail characteristic of Pastoe's output from this period and one that lends the piece a lighter, more architectural presence in a room.

Constructed from teak veneer with a birch-veneered interior, the cabinet shows the material honesty and restrained detailing typical of Cees Braakman's work for Pastoe — clean lines, visible joinery logic, and a clear absence of ornament in favor of function and proportion. The piece is in good vintage condition, consistent with age and use.
