Louis van Teeffelen Reversible-Top Coffee Table – Teak, Mid-Century Modern, The Netherlands, 1960s

€495.00

A coffee table designed by Louis van Teeffelen, executed in solid teak with a teak veneer top. The tapered, sculpted legs and the raised shelf are characteristic of Dutch mid-century design from the 1960s, when van Teeffelen worked for manufacturers such as Wébé and Webe-associated workshops known for this kind of refined, understated construction.

The most distinctive feature is the reversible tabletop, allowing the surface to be flipped for a fresh face or a different grain presentation — a practical and thoughtfully engineered detail typical of the period's Dutch design approach. The teak shows a warm, even patina with clear, well-figured grain, and the tapered legs terminate in the rounded pommel feet typical of van Teeffelen's work.

Structurally sound and fully functional, with wear consistent with age and honest use. A well-proportioned piece suited to a mid-century modern living room or study, and a solid addition for collectors of Dutch design from this era.

Information

This coffee table was designed by Louis van Teeffelen (1921–1972) for the Dutch manufacturer Wébé, where he served as head designer from 1955 and remained the company's most significant and successful designer until his departure in 1967. Van Teeffelen introduced a Scandinavian-influenced aesthetic to Dutch furniture design, favoring sculptural, organic forms combined with functional detailing — a combination that made his work for Wébé some of the most recognizable Dutch mid-century design of the period.

This particular table, known as Model 44, is built from solid teak with a teak veneer top and features a reversible tabletop — a signature functional detail found across several of van Teeffelen's designs for Wébé. The table's tapered, sculptural legs and lower display shelf are characteristic of his work, reflecting the balance between craftsmanship and everyday usability that defined his output through the 1950s and 60s.

The reversible top allows the table to be flipped, either to present a fresh, undamaged surface or simply to offer a different grain presentation — a practical solution rooted in mid-century Dutch design thinking, where function was never separated from form. The teak shows a rich, even color with well-defined grain, and the rounded pommel feet at the top of each leg are a recognizable van Teeffelen detail.
