"Drive" Table Lamp by Adalberto Dal Lago & Adam Thiani for Bieffeplast / Francesconi, Italy, 1974
A "Drive" table lamp, designed by Adalberto Dal Lago together with Adam Thiani in 1974 and produced in Italy by Bieffeplast / Francesconi. The Drive belongs to a series of table and wall lamps built from plastic, rubber and safety glass, and is a recognisable example of Italian Space Age lighting from the period.
The lamp pairs a matte white plastic body with a round, disc-shaped diffuser in safety glass with an encased metal wire grid, set on a weighted black rubber base. The head can be rotated to direct the light, and the lamp can be used either freestanding on a table or mounted on a wall. The contrast between the white structure, the black base and the technical wire-glass diffuser gives it the industrial, almost instrument-like character typical of Dal Lago's work for Bieffeplast.
The wire-reinforced safety glass is a defining detail of the series: functional in origin, but visually it turns the lit diffuser into a graphic, gridded disc of light. The relatively heavy rubber base keeps the lamp stable while allowing the head to be angled, which makes it as practical today as it was intended to be in the 1970s.
The design is documented in Giuliana Gramigna's Repertorio del Design Italiano 1950-2000 (p. 229) and in Gianluca Sgalippa's Space Age Lights (p. 115), which underlines its place in Italian design history and makes it an appealing piece for collectors as well as for interiors.
In good vintage condition with light wear consistent with age and use, in working order. Takes an E14 bulb. Sourced and offered by Infinity Resale in Antwerp, Belgium, with careful packing and shipping across Europe and worldwide.
