Muller Frères Lunéville Mottled Glass Vase, France, circa 1920s
A mottled glass vase by Muller Frères, Lunéville, signed and dating to circa 1920s. The trumpet-shaped body rises from a circular foot to a softly pinched rim, the glass marbled in tones of amber, ochre and deep orange. These colours were achieved by fusing coloured oxides into the molten glass — a technique known as verre marmoréen, for which the Lorraine glassworks was recognised during the Art Deco period.
The mottling gives the vase a warm, glowing quality that shifts with the light, no two pieces being exactly alike. Signed Muller Frères Lunéville.
Information
A mottled glass vase by Muller Frères of Lunéville, signed and dating to the 1920s. The piece comes from one of the most important French glassworks of the period — a workshop founded by brothers who had trained under Émile Gallé in Nancy, and who went on to build a reputation that rivalled the great names of French Art Nouveau and Art Deco glass.
The vase has a trumpet-shaped body that rises from a solid circular foot to a softly flaring rim, finished with two small pulled-ear points — a hand-formed detail typical of Muller's work. The glass itself is the real subject: marbled in warm, shifting tones of amber, ochre and deep orange, with no two areas alike. This effect was achieved by fusing coloured metallic oxides directly into the molten glass, a technique known as verre marmoréen, for which the Lorraine glassworks was widely recognised. The surface has a soft, satin quality that catches and holds the light, giving the colour real depth.
Unlike the firm's figurative cameo pieces, this vase relies entirely on colour and form rather than carved decoration — a quieter, more abstract side of Muller's output that sits comfortably in both period and contemporary interiors. It works as a standalone object on a shelf, mantel or table, and needs no flowers to earn its place.
