Belgian Modernist Home Bar in Teak and Steel, Attributed to De Coene, 1950s–60s
A freestanding home bar of Belgian modernist design, attributed to De Coene and reflecting the steel-framed vocabulary associated with Jules Wabbes. The piece combines a teak-edged white laminate top with vertically reeded, dark-lacquered panels across the front and sides, raised on a black tubular steel base with an integrated footrest.
The customer-facing front originally carries a hand-painted reverse-glass panel, a decorative feature typical of Belgian bars from this period. At some point a dark olive-green panel was fitted over it to conceal the window. This later addition is non-structural and can be removed to bring back the original painted glass.
Designed and produced in Belgium, circa 1950s–60s. Offered by Infinity Resale in Antwerp, with shipping across Europe and worldwide.
Information
A freestanding home bar of Belgian modernist design, attributed to De Coene and built in the steel-framed idiom associated with Jules Wabbes. The piece pairs warm teak with industrial materials in a way that is characteristic of Belgian production from this period, when cabinetmakers began integrating tubular steel into otherwise wood-based furniture.
The top is finished in white laminate with a teak-edged border, set above front and side panels in vertically reeded, dark-lacquered wood. The whole rests on a black tubular steel base with an integrated footrest, giving the bar its standing height and an open, architectural stance rather than the closed look of a conventional bar cabinet.
The customer-facing front originally features a hand-painted reverse-glass panel, a decorative detail found on better Belgian bars of the era. At some point a dark olive-green panel was fitted over it to conceal the window. This later addition is non-structural and can be removed to bring back the original painted glass — a straightforward way to restore the bar to its intended appearance.
