Mid-Century Teak Side Table on Castors by Louis van Teeffelen for Wébé, 1960s
A mid-century two-tier teak side table on castors, designed by Louis van Teeffelen for Wébé, the Netherlands, 1960s. The rectangular top sits above a smaller floating lower shelf, carried on slanted, tapered solid teak legs — a sculptural, architectural base characteristic of Van Teeffelen's work for Wébé. Mounted on castors, it served as a mobile side or television table.
The warm teak grain and clean lines make it a versatile piece as a side table, lamp table or mobile occasional table, suited to both mid-century modern and contemporary interiors.
Condition: very good vintage condition. The piece has a previously applied varnished finish, giving it a glossier surface than untreated teak. Light wear consistent with age.
Information
A mid-century two-tier teak side table on castors, designed by Louis van Teeffelen for Wébé in the Netherlands during the 1960s. This is a piece where the base does the talking: slanted, tapered solid teak legs splay outward and meet the structure at an angle, carrying a smaller floating lower shelf between them. The result is a sculptural, almost architectural frame that lifts the table off the floor and gives it a sense of movement, even at rest — a signature of Van Teeffelen's cabinetmaking for Wébé.
The rectangular top shows warm teak grain with the natural figure and depth that vintage teak develops over time. Below it, the second tier offers a practical surface for books, magazines or a small object, while the original castors allow the whole piece to be moved easily around a room. Built at 68 cm high, it sits taller than a typical occasional table: it was conceived as a television table, holding a set at comfortable viewing height, but works equally well today as a tall lamp table, a side table beside a high-armed sofa or armchair, or a mobile occasional table wherever it is needed.
Louis van Teeffelen was one of the defining figures of Dutch mid-century furniture design, serving as lead designer for Wébé through the 1950s and 60s. His teak work is recognised for its sculptural, expressive bases combined with restrained, functional tops — a balance clearly present in this table. This example is documented in the Wébé catalogue under his name, making it a well-attributed piece of Dutch design history rather than an anonymous period table.
With its compact footprint, two useful surfaces and characterful base, this is a versatile piece that holds its own in a full mid-century interior and adds warmth and a sculptural note to a contemporary or minimalist space.
Condition: Very good vintage condition. The piece has a previously applied varnished finish, which gives it a glossier surface than untreated, oiled teak — worth noting for collectors who prefer a matte original finish. Light wear consistent with age and use. Structurally sound and stable, running smoothly on its castors.
