Belgian Brutalist Bar Cabinet — Black-Stained Oak with Illuminated Dry Bar, 1970s
A striking Belgian brutalist bar cabinet from the 1970s, in black-stained oak with deeply milled concentric circles on the doors. Behind them, a fitted dry bar with integrated lighting, a mirrored back panel and three bottle holders. Of solid, heavy construction — a genuine quality marker for this period. Sourced in Belgium, offered from Antwerp.
Information
This bar cabinet dates from the 1970s, the height of the Belgian brutalist period, and is executed in black-stained oak with the open, expressive grain left visible beneath the dark finish. Unlike the lighter veneer-on-board pieces common to the era, it is of solid, heavy construction — the kind of weight and density collectors look for.
The two upper doors carry the bold graphic relief that defines this work: deeply milled concentric circles that catch light and shadow across the surface. Below sit three full-width drawers, each fitted with paired turned-wood pulls.
Open the doors and the dark exterior gives way to a fitted dry bar. A white-lacquered service area is finished with integrated lighting, a mirrored back panel and three cylindrical bottle holders, with two interior drawers and a warm cognac-toned laminate lining — the functional, almost theatrical interior typical of 1970s bar furniture.
Both sculptural and practical, it works as a bar, a media cabinet or a statement storage piece in a dining room, living space or interior project. A characterful original, unattributed and in the manner of the small Belgian ateliers producing this work in the period.
