Martin Visser white nesting tables, Netherlands 1980's
Minimalist set of three nesting tables designed by Martin Visser for ‘t Spectrum. A refined example of Dutch modernist design from the 1950s. The tables feature white formica tops and slim white metal frames. Clean lines. Functional construction. Each table slides neatly under the other, which saves space and adds flexibility in use.
This set works well as side tables, coffee tables, or occasional tables in a modern or mid-century interior. The crisp white surfaces create a strong contrast with warm woods and natural materials.
Information
The design is defined by its clean architectural lines. Each table features a square white laminate (formica) top resting within a slender white metal frame. The subtle gap between the top and the frame gives the tables a refined floating effect while maintaining a very strict geometric structure. This restrained aesthetic is characteristic of Visser’s work and aligns with the broader modernist movement that emphasized clarity, function, and structural honesty.
The three tables slide neatly under one another, creating a practical and space-saving arrangement. They can be used together as a flexible coffee table composition or individually as side tables in different areas of an interior. This versatility made nesting tables particularly popular in European modernist interiors during the 1950s and 1960s.
The combination of white laminate and metal creates a strong visual contrast when placed in interiors with natural materials such as teak, walnut, wool, or leather. Because of their neutral palette and refined proportions, these tables integrate effortlessly into both mid-century modern interiors and contemporary minimalist spaces.
Martin Visser is widely recognized for his influential role in Dutch design.
